Car Insurance Saab (Car Insurance). does boosting you car all the time ruin it?does boosting you car all the time ruin it? i have a wrx and get the boost going to like 15psi most days can this wreck it? Generally speaking, boost won't ruin a car's internals. Turbochargers will only produce significant amounts of boost when the throttle is wide open, which produces the most exhaust gasses, which are used to drive the turbo's exhaust turbine, which turns a shaft linked to the compressor turbine, which produces the boost. Kinda complicated, I know. What this means is that when you are just driving around town, and don't have your foot to the floor, the turbocharger is turning fast enough to provide air to the engine for proper combustion, but it's not producing boost. Keep the rev's low to keep the car from producing boost, and even if the turbo does start to spool up, it's unlikely you will produce full boost pressure unless you have the throttle wide open. Also, be sure to get your oil changed regularly, at least every 3,000 miles if not every 2,500. Dirty or gunky oil can harm the turbo's internals and lead to early turbo failure. Another trick to help maintain your turbo is to leave your engine running for about 45 to 60 seconds once you get to your destination, either manually or with a turbo timer. This allows the hot oil to exit the turbo and for cooler oil to circulate through. Cooking oil inside the turbo is a leading cause of turbo failure. The Mitsubishi turbo charger does have a weak spot, it has bushings and not bearings. It also has the strong point of being both water and oil cooled. This means that they develop oil leaks sooner. But are pretty easy to overhaul. By running at boost most of the time, you are wearing out these bushings faster, the 15 PSI does not help either. One article that I read said you should avoid runs in excess of three minutes at full boost. At 15 psi you are expecting the rings to perform at twice the pressure of a normal engine. So the rings will fail earlier in your car then a normally aspirated one. As Pappy always said "If you are going to drive like a race car driver, expect to rebuild like one too!". Saab . How to Check the Engine Light in a 2005 Chrysler 3.8Once the engine alights on a 2005 Chrysler's dashboard, it means something within the engine has malfunctioned. All 2005 Chrysler cars and light trucks are outfitted with the second generation of On-Board Diagnostics. The OBD-II system is standardized to all vehicles after 1996, by Environmental Protection Agency mandate. Checking the light requires a diagnostic scanner, and the process of retrieving the codes is fairly simple. These codes will tell you why the light is on. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need OBD-II scanner Step by Step : 1 Locate the diagnostic data link connection in your 2005 Chrysler. The DLC port is almost always located on the driver's side of the dashboard, on its underside. Look first at the steering column, and then to the left or the right. 2 Plug your scanner's diagnostic cable into the DLC port. Since scanners are different by brand, the next steps vary by brand and model of scanner. Where the buttons are located are different, as is the orientation of the user interface. Also, defer to the operational tips and steps contained in your scanner's user manual. 3 Turn the scanner on if it is not programmed to activate itself once it senses a connection to the Chrysler. 4 Insert your key into the Chrysler's ignition, and turn to "On." This will bring up the electrical system. Some scanners may need the engine cranked. 5 Look at the scanner's read-out display. If your scanner is not programmed to auto-retrieve codes, you will have to find the appropriate buttons, and key the "Scan" code in yourself. 6 Consult your scanner's manual once the codes have been retrieved from the 2005 Chrysler's diagnostic system. Toward the rear of the manual, you will find an appendix or list of generic OBD-II codes. These are universal to all post-1996 vehicles. You may need to consult Chrysler's extra, unique OBD-II codes. For those, you will have search online (see Resources). Your owner's manual will not have them at all. 7 Power down the Chrysler's electrical system, and remove the key from the ignition. Remove the scanner's diagnostic cable from the DLC port. Tips & Warnings The more you are willing to pay for your OBD-II scanner, the more functionality you will get out of it. Some diagnostic handhelds are simple code readers, good for retrieving only code. Other scanners are more sophisticated and can not only interact with the 2005 Chrysler's diagnostic system, but your home computer via a USB connection. Some stores might be willing to lend you their scanner for free, but many do not and garages charge a diagnostic fee. Buying a scanner will eventually pay for itself in money saved. If you opt for a garage, you can at least tell them what the specific problem is and save money on diagnostic fees and labor. Saab . The Procedure to Troubleshoot a Dodge Caravan EngineA Dodge Caravan's engine is a complex machine, and for every symptom of a problem that arises, there could be a couple of explanations. So, while troubleshooting a Caravan's engine sometimes only takes a good set of eyes while examining an engine, it still can be time consuming. The Caravan's On-Board Diagnostic system can streamline this process and cut out a number of false leads. How to use the OBD system depends on the year the Caravan was manufactured. The second generation of engine diagnostics became standardized in 1996. Caravans before that year use a totally different process. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need OBD-II scanner Pen PaperCaravans 1996 and Later Step by Step : 1 Plug an OBD-II scanner into the Caravan's diagnostic Data Link Connection. The DLC outlet will be located beneath the driver's side dash and somewhere between the gas pedal and the left side kick panel. 2 Consult your scanner's user manual for the exact process. Button and faceplate orientations differ by brand of scanner, and so does the command entering process. Some scanners will switch on once sensing an incoming data stream from an OBD-II system. If you do not own this type of scanner, you will have to press the power button and turn the device on. 3 Turn either the Caravan's engine or the electrical system on. Your scanner device will require one or the other. If your scanner is not pre-programmed to retrieve OBD-II codes, you will have to key the appropriate button and enter a "Scan" or "Retrieve" command. 4 Read through the codes your scanner device retrieved. Some may be designated as "trouble" and some may be designated as "pending." Make a list with the trouble codes at the top and the pending codes at the bottom. Leave ample space next to the alphanumeric codes for later use. 5 Turn the Caravan's engine and/or electrical system off and remove the key from the ignition. Consult your scanner's manual for the OBD-II generic trouble codes. If the codes on your list are not defined in the manual, then you will have to look up Chrysler's supplemental OBD-II codes online. The Caravan's owner manual will not contain that information. Once you have found all the relevant code definitions, copy them onto your list next to the appropriate codes. 6 Return to your Caravan and open the hood to the engine compartment. Start with the trouble codes first, as they have happened frequently and set off your check engine light. Cross out codes once you have eliminated them from consideration. Then, move onto the pending codes. If you still cannot locate the problem, consider taking the vehicle to a Chrysler-approved mechanic. Caravans 1995 and Earlier Step by Step : 1 Insert your key into the Caravan's ignition. Within the span of five seconds, turn the key back and forth in the following sequence: ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON. 2 Watch the check engine light. It will begin to start flashing code at you. Count the flashes. Chrysler's OBD-I flash codes are sets of two numbers. The first number will flash, and a short pause will follow before the second number flashes. So code 38 will be three flashes, a pause, and eight more flashes. There will be a longer pause between code sets. Write all of these numbers down. 3 Turn the Caravan's electrical system off and remove the key from the ignition. Exit the vehicle and sit behind a computer. You will need to find Chrysler's OBD-I codes, and the owner's manual will not have them. Once you locate code descriptions, jot them down next to code numbers your recorded in Step 2. 4 Return to your Caravan and pop the hood. Investigate every code on your list and cross them out once they have been eliminated from consideration. If your list does not provide an answer and you are stumped, seek out a professional mechanic. *The beauty of a fuel cell is that it takes the place of a storage battery and produces electricity directly from a plentiful element: hydrogen. Once perfected, fuel cell-electric cars will have the range and "refill-ability" of gasoline-powered cars. Of course, the method of getting hydrogen to the car in the first place is still up in the air. 156 Part II: What Makes It Go?. Figure 7-13: A fuel cell. One method would require construction of thousands of hydrogen filling stations where motorists would pull in to fill their cars' tanks with either liquid or gaseous hydrogen. Still to be resolved, of course, is how to finance construction of such a delivery system or infrastructure. The industry also has not yet settled on what form of hydrogen to use. Gaseous hydrogen, like CNG, would have to be stored in tanks that could withstand thousands of pounds of pressure. But liquid hydrogen has to be stored at unbelievably cold temperatures — 423 degrees below 0 — and then must be warmed up to function properly in a fuel cell. A fuel-cell electric car that ran directly on hydrogen would produce virtually no emissions — the only thing dribbling out of the tailpipe would be a trickle of distilled water formed in the interaction of the hydrogen and oxygen inside the cell! But because of the problems inherent in getting hydrogen to cars, some in the industry are considering another type of system. It appears that the hydrogen needed for a fuel cell to operate can be produced on-board a car or truck, distilled, if you will, from a hydrocarbon fuel such as gasoline, methanol, or ethanol. The process requires the fuel to be turned into a vapor under high heat. That process produces carbon monoxide and a few other pollutants, so it isn't as clean as a system that uses hydrogen directly, but it's still far cleaner than an internal combustion engine. . Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles f C *7 Those problems aside, the cells that industry uses are far too large for automobiles, and a good deal of work has gone into figuring out how to shrink them. Automakers have developed fuel cells that are small enough to put into test vehicles, although they are still 30 to 50 percent too heavy for commercial use. They still are about 10 times too costly to be considered for commercial use. But their time is coming. DaimlerChrysler has said that it will have fuel cell cars in the retail market by 2004. And the other major automakers won't be far behind. 384

The electrics on the market today handle remarkably well and can hold their own on busy freeways. They're not the cars to take on a long trip, but for commuting and most daily use, they're no different from their gasoline-powered cousins once you get past the fact that there's no engine under the hood and that you don't have to pull into a gas station unless you have to use the restroom or you get a nail in one of the special, low-rolling resistance tires. What is under the hood is a powerful electric motor — all the necessary wires and plumbing, plus all the equipment for conventional heating and air conditioning, power brakes, and power steering. You even find a conventional 12-volt battery to provide start-up power and keep the clock, power locks, and other electrically controlled devices in operation when the power plant is shut down. Inside, an electric car looks much the same as any other. (All but the EV-1 started life as conventional ICE vehicles and were modified to become electrics.) The biggest difference is on the instrument panel. Instead of a fuel gauge that shows how full the tank is, electric vehicles have digital readouts that show how much charge is left in the battery and how economically — or not — you are driving. And those with regenerative braking systems have a gauge or readout that shows when power is being generated and stored. (Regenerative braking uses the energy of the braking action to generate electricity to replace a very small part of what is consumed when accelerating.) Several electric cars also have a readout that estimates the number of miles remaining before they run out of juice. Some, like Nissan's Altra EV, also have a digital tachometer that tells you how fast the electric motor is revolving. And it's much faster than the crankshaft in a gasoline-fueled car! Driving down the freeway at 74 mph and glancing down at the tach to see that you're cruising at 16,000 rpm is unsettling! 158 Part II: What Makes It Go?. The other oddity — and it's fun to watch the guys at the car wash try to figure this out — is that an electric vehicle doesn't do much of anything when the key is turned on. Sometimes a small cooling fan kicks in, and the "On" or "Ready" indicator light on the dashboard lights up. But that's it. No roar, no sputter. Pump the accelerator all you want; you get no action. An electric motor doesn't rev up until you engage the transmission. When you engage the transmission, you send a signal to the motor controller, which boosts the voltage to the motor in response to the pressure you place on the accelerator (which looks and feels just like a gas pedal). As the volt Saab . When you hear a jet overhead why does it seem to be in the wrong place when you look for it?
It is due to Doppler Shift. The plane is going very fast relative to you, so sound lags behind it Ford Freestar Passenger. * age increases, the motor spins faster. The power is transmitted to the drive axle through a series of gears, just as the power from a conventional vehicle's revolving crankshaft is transmitted. (If you've forgotten how it does that, review Chapter 4.) The difference is that, because an electric vehicle delivers full torque at all times, the transmission has only a single speed. There's no need to shift into higher or lower gears to increase the motor's efficiency. So it's a simple matter of getting in, turning the key, shifting into Forward or Reverse, and driving away. You may see a cloud of dust — it depends on where you parked — but you won't see a cloud of fumes or hear a rumble of exhaust. Just the whine of an electric motor ramping up. Many problems must be overcome before the gasoline-driven internal combustion engine is relegated to museums and classic car collections. But the industry and various governments are spending billions of dollars to develop functional electric and hybrid vehicles for personal use. The Car of the Future is a matter of when, not whether. It may already be on the road by the time you read this book! Chapter 8 Saab . How do you bridge jl audio wsixs car woofers?
